Abstract
Abstract
|
This project studies one of the major adverse effects of prednisolone in detail: induction of insulin resistance and beta cell dysfunction. The key role of beta cell dysfunction in the development of type 2 diabetes has only recently been fully recognized. This project will identify the most relevant tissues for prednisolone-mediated induction of insulin resistance and beta cell dysfunction. Additionally, it will describe the key molecular components and pathways in those tissues. This knowledge will be crucial for pharmaceutical companies in the development of new glucocorticoids that are as efficacious as prednisolone but with fewer metabolic side effects. |
