Abstract

What (if anything) is wrong with contemporary representation byparties, parliaments and party governments? This book written inEnglish examines the political and ethical implications of a recenttransformation of the West, namely the rise of audience democracy. This is a new variant of representative democracy, featured bycampaign parties, television-mediated leaders, monitorial voters, assertive mass media, and governance (horizontal shaping of agreementon the use of political power rather than government, that istop-down or bottom-up agreement). The book is based on a model ofdemocracy of the French political theorist Bernhard Manin (Principlesof Representative Democracy, 1995, 1997 (English translation))
