Abstract

Process industries face specific problems with respect to planning and scheduling. The mixture of inflexible capacities, increasing variety in products and packaging, and smaller lead times results in high demands on the planning and scheduling function within these firms. The performance of this function strongly depends on the design of the logistical system. We investigate the interrelationship between planning and logistical system design and focus on the reduction of complexities within the total system design. Moreover, we develop tools and mathematical models that support the planning and scheduling function within process industries.
