Mission Babylon focuses on the study of linguistic, cultural and religious diversity, as characteristics of the multicultural society. At this, Babylon investigates questions at the borderline of science and society. Within this mission, the main activities Babylon performs are: the obtaining and performing of internally and externally financed research; the development and support of (contract) education; the use and dissemination of obtained knowledge. Babylon mainly focuses on the following themes: identity and ethnicity, acculturation, multilingualism, religious experience and forming, intercultural communication, citizenship, processes of migration, globalisation, family socialisation and education.
