| Mission |
NOSTER's research field is religion in the widest sense of the word. This includes the way in which religious images and practices determine people's sense of purpose in life, their appreciation of reality, and how they direct their actions in the world. In NOSTER's programme the notion of 'theology' refers to the study of religious images, traditions and practices, including research into religion as a phenomenon. The methodological presuppositions and the scholarly status of theology in these two senses, are also the object of reflection in NOSTER's research programme. NOSTER's research focuses on one central theme, viz. studies of religious traditions in a. their continuity and discontinuity b. their pluralism and plurality. What is the nature of continuity of religious traditions and how is/was this continuity preserved? In what ways have new religious ideas surfaced and what factors have given rise to changes in religious traditions? How does plurality develop in religious traditions? How do religious traditions grow apart and is it possible for various religions to co-exist in one culture? What is the nature of mutual influence among such traditions? What conditions are a prerequisite for interreligious dialogue? |
